While achieving fame for designing such historic buildings as Downing Street and The Bank of England, architect Sir John Soane amassed a vast collection of antiquities and paintings, including works by Hogarth, Canaletto and JMW Turner.
Sir John’s success as an architect and fascination with historic buildings led to his appointment in 1806 as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy. He transformed his grand residence in London’s Lincoln’s Inn Fields into a museum for students and home for his burgeoning collection of eclectic artefacts.
